Fragile Earth Series

This series grew out of an existential and growing threat of our beautiful planet out of kilter with it’s normal state of equilibrium. A balance which allows for the co-existence of all living things. Our ever increasing human footprint engulfing wild spaces and habitats, migratory patterns and the change in the flow and rhythm of long established ocean currents, weather patterns and the impact on all of us has become central to my focus.

The pandemic lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 forced us all to slow down, to look up, out and around, notice tiny things, the claw back of nature and the waxing and waning of moons which marked time. A family of nocturnal foxes started partying on my car roof, I noticed this because there were no planes flying and the local buses had stopped rattling down my road every 20 minutes. I became intoxicated with the fact that this intervention had allowed such a quick recovery of nature. It was hopeful, achievable and essential.

The circular orbs painted in veils of watercolour, inks and masked out areas, interlaced with themarkers and patterns of life on the move, branches or veins, the found imagery which I cut out of photographic narratives and re-position and juxtapose within a re-imagined space and new narrative. Something regenerative and hopeful, often celebratory.

  • Pink Leopard & Red Rose

    £1,500
Original mixed media ink painting on paper
    77.5 x 77.5cm (framed)

One of the first Fragile Earth Series of circular paintings, Pink Leopard and Red Rose explores the human imprint and encroachment into wild habitats. I was always astonished at how beautifully Roses grew in South African gardens and this cultivation and determination of us to subjugate the land to our will. I also celebrate all the diversity and beauty of our own endeavours and that of mother nature who has given us the ultimate gifts.
